Kia ora e te whanau o Te Kāpehu Whetū
What a week!!!
Watching the tangihanga of Kiingi Tuheitia and the announcement of Kuini Ngā wai hono i te po Paki as his successor….both kura sites watched proceedings throughout the week….the coverage on TV media allowed us all to be part of a significant day/week for Māori.
Whether we are Tainui or not or whether we support the Kīngitanga or not, there was no doubt that the events of the last few weeks have impacted Māori across the motu. To see Tainui come together over the last week, conducting powhiri after powhiri after powhiri for huge crowds, feeding thousands and maintaining tikanga was inspiring to say the least! It left many Iwi contemplating their own purpose, growth and development. Consequently, today, I like many others attended the Ngāpuhi Runanga roadshow at Hihiaua, as our own Iwi Runanga endeavour to reset and consider our common future. As whanau of a Kura Māori it is imperative that we work in kotahitanga with each other, within our own whanau, Hāpu and Iwi, for the benefit of our tamariki and mokopuna….that is the endearing message left to us by Kiingi Tuheitia and the proceedings of this week! Which is why I can say:
I love our kaupapa and our panui!!
It shows the mahi and effort continuously put in by staff and ākonga across our Kura….and we see our Kura and our ākonga lifting. It is the hard yards and incessant commitment by ākonga, whanau and staff that enables our Kura to look towards horizons from Paenuku to Paetata to Paetawhiti to Paerangi….”Waiho i te taha katau o te rā, o te marama o kōpū rere ai”
“Empowering our ākonga to Be Māori, Be Educated, Be Rangatira so that they can navigate their futures in a changing world….standing confidently on the marae and in the world” “Tū ki te marae….Tū ki te Ao”
Whaea Luana and Whaea Hera are both out māuiui, we wish them both a speedy recovery. We have a plan in place to support Paenuku. Whaea Petina and Whaea Jo-dean (Mokopuna ECE) are going down to support. Paetata and staff are out at AIMs Games, Good luck and Go hard!!! Through to the end of Term 3 our focus will be on preparing Paenuku and Paetata for Regional Kapahaka in the first week of Term 4 and there is a focus on getting Paerangi through their NCEA and a continuation of capability building across our 3 Pou in all four whare!
Kia pai to wiki!
Ngā mihi

REMINDER: KAPA HAKA TRAINING THIS WEEK WILL BE DOWN AT AIMs
We are drawing closer to the kapa haka regionals that take place in Kaikohe on the 19th of October 2024 (End of Week 1 Term 4).
Below is the outline of the training schedule moving forward from here. It is important that your tamaiti/tamariki attend all trainings and come prepared, knowing every item, so that we can continue to progress with our bracket.
As always, we want to ensure that our kapa put their best foot forward. We have an exciting bracket with lots of new elements, and we will need each practice to perfect each item.
As the competition date approaches, we will send out another pānui outlining performance times and the travel schedule. This will include a list of items each tamaiti will need for the performance.
If you have any questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact Matua Ropata, Whaea Hera, or Staff Louis.
Nō reira ka nui ēnei kōrero mō tēnei wā.

He nui ngā mahi kua mahia e matou I te wiki kua pahure nei, heoi ano, ka haere tonu te kaupapa.
This week paetata started three days of kapa haka in preparation for the kapa regionals coming up in term 4. They have been doing really well in learning their actions and words.
Paetawhiti were immersed in career pathways with a number of education providers coming in to korero and share their mahi and future learning possibilities with our akonga.
We are very grateful for all of those who gave up their time to share their mahi.
Career Expo
Paetawhiti careers expo was an opportunity that allowed our akonga to explore other learning and career pathways they could consider when they get older. We welcomed te kura o motatau and te kura o whangaruru who joined us for the two days.
Nui Whakapiki
Thank you to whānau who booked in a time to attend hui whakapiki. We acknowledge the investment you have with our child’s learning and supporting their pouako in helping to make these important learning years count towards their future endeavors.

Paerangi
Tēnā tātou katoa.
It has been a busy week in Paerangi with special interest in the tangihanga of Kīngi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero in Waikato and more so who the next monarch will be.
Tuesday was a good chance to catch up with whānau on the progress of their tamaiti in Paerangi at hui whakapiki. It was also a chance to touch base with those whānau who turned up.
Paerangi ākonga have had various outings this week as well with Waerenga garden mahi and students out doing a NorthTec course.
Ākonga are progressing with their assessments for NCEA and will continue to do so until each subject is completed.
Kia kaha tonu tātou
Ngā mihi
Matua Ropata
IRON MĀORI UPDATE
We will be entering several teams into IronMāori Tamaki 2024 next term on Saturday 16th November 2024. In preparation we will be doing sport specific trainings for our swimmers, cyclists and runners. There will be a lot of interest in the swimming and cycling groups in particular so priority will go to those who are committed and bring a great attitude. With a strong aerobic base built up from classes at Whangarei Boxing Gym, and from the cardio work at kura, we are in a very strong position to push hard and excel in our training and in competition. Nga mihi, Matua Rua
Attendance
PLEASE NOTE:
Along with disallowing cell phones and IT devices from being used in Kura (unless part of a lesson and allowed for learning by Pouako) another Government policy being measured is Student Attendance. See below:
The Government has set a target of 70% regular attendance for every student each term for 2024
Attendance is linked to both student wellbeing and to attainment. Ministry of Education insights studies show that attending Kura regularly is, on average, associated with more positive wellbeing outcomes. Attendance is also linked to student attainment especially in secondary students.
Although we have a good attendance rate across the Kura, it can be better. Our attendance across both sites is usually around mid-high 70s.
We understand that there are valid and important reasons for ākonga to be out of school at times and this is ok but please let the tari know when and why your child is absent.
Tari Year 7-13 ring Whaea Jackie: (09) 955 9996
Tari Year 1-6 ring Whaea Sam: (09) 438 8033
Automated text notification of absence
We have reinitiated our automated text message system for absences starting next week. If your child is marked with an unknown absence in the morning on an automatic text message will be sent to the primary caregiver(s) to notify them.
Thank you very much to all whanau who have responded to these texts either by replying or contacting the office. This has made a significant difference to the number of unjustified absences we have.
Policies
Te Kāpehu Whetū has worked with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures.
The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and align with the National Education and Learning Priorities. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our school board has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented.
We invite you to visit the site at School Docs
