Kia ora e te whanau o Te Kāpehu Whetū

Week 9 of Term 3: One week to go……
Paenuku finally moved into their new prefabs permanently and are using one prefab as the whare for Mangaroa while the other one is used as the whare for group practices and hui. The kitchen has been installed and will be fully operational by Term 4, enabling Paenuku to lunch in one space. I had the opportunity to attend morning karakia and watch their kapahaka practice. Beautiful to
see our Teina putting all their effort into our tikanga and kaupapa.

I also had the privilege to be invited to the farewell of 6 members of Ngati Whatua Trust Board, including Dame Naida Glavish. Dame Naida has been part of the board for nearly 30 years and leaves it in good stead. Our Tuakana ākonga were also invited to performed waiata and haka.

NOTE: with Whaea Hera and Lu away, we have decided to move Market Day out to Term 4 – TBC

Kia pai to wiki!

Ngā mihi

PAENUKU HI, PAENUKU HĀ!

Kia ora koutou,
Paenuku tamariki have been working hard this week to prepare for the upcoming Kapa haka regionals in October. Thank you Whaea Erana, Whaea Sam and matua Gene for stepping in to get our roopu ready. This is fast approaching and everyone is giving their all to be ready to take the stage. There will be a panui coming out with important information
in regards to training times and regionals. Please keep an eye out for this panui.

In between kapa haka training we have had the privilege of having Matua Mohi and Matua Nev come down and do some hakinakina with our ākonga. It has been awesome to watch the ākonga get out there and have fun while doing active movement.
Thank you Matua Mohi and Matua Nev for helping out!!!

Paenuku/Paetawhiti

This week, paetata and paetawhiti have been actively engaged in different areas of development. For paetata and paenuku, kapa haka practices have been running for four consecutive days. The students are showing great dedication, and their performances are steadily improving their timing, confidence, and synchronization are strengthening, and they are building strong connections as a group. The commitment they’ve displayed will surely lead to a powerful final performance.

Paetawhiti, on the other hand, has been focusing on a growth mindset. They’ve been exploring what it means to be a rangatira for oneself before being able to lead and give to others. This self-reflective work has encouraged students to look at their personal goals, resilience, and the importance of self-leadership. They are learning that leading by example starts from within, building a strong foundation for contributing positively to their whānau and wider community. With just one week left before the final term of the year, both whare are making significant strides toward their respective goals. It’s been a productive and reflective week for all!

Paerangi

As we approach the end of the term, our Paerangi students are hard at work, tying up the loose ends of their mahi and preparing for a strong finish. It has been a term full of growth, learning, and service, and the students have been especially dedicated to completing their projects with excellence.

A key part of our weekly rhythm has been the trips to the farm on Thursdays, where students get hands on with the land, helping to maintain and beautify the gardens. These visits offer a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with nature, contribute to their community, and learn valuable lessons in sustainability and teamwork. The garden work not only enriches their academic journey but also fosters a sense of responsibility and service to the environment.

As we finish this term, we encourage students to stay focused and finish strong. Whether it’s completing projects, wrapping up garden work, or reflecting on their personal and academic growth, the end of term is a time to celebrate all that has been achieved and look ahead to the future with excitement.

Kia kaha, Paerangi! Let’s bring this term to a positive and powerful close.

IRON MĀORI Update

Kia ora koutou,

We’re excited to announce that training has kicked off for the IRON MĀORI Tāmaki 2024 triathlon, happening on Saturday, 16th November! Our students are gearing up for the event, with those keen to compete working hard in their individual disciplines of either cycling, swimming, or running. For our non-competitive students, training is still full steam ahead as they focus on building their aerobic fitness and muscular endurance.

A big mihi to all the students who have stepped up to the challenge of working towards selection in our 2024 IronMaori triathlon squad. We’re proud of your commitment and determination as you begin this exciting journey toward participating in such an inspiring event. Ka mau te wehi! Keep up the fantastic work!

Mauri ora, Matua Rua

Attendance

PLEASE NOTE:

Along with disallowing cell phones and IT devices from being used in Kura (unless part of a lesson and allowed for learning by Pouako) another Government policy being measured is Student Attendance.  See below:

The Government has set a target of 70% regular attendance for every student each term for 2024

Attendance is linked to both student wellbeing and to attainment. Ministry of Education insights studies show that attending Kura regularly is, on average, associated with more positive wellbeing outcomes.  Attendance is also linked to student attainment, especially in secondary students.

Although we have a good attendance rate across the Kura, it can be better.  Our attendance across both sites is usually around mid-high 70s.

We understand that there are valid and important reasons for ākonga to be out of school at times and this is ok but please let the tari know when and why your child is absent.

Tari Year 7-13 ring Whaea Jackie: (09) 955 9996

Tari Year 1-6 ring Whaea Sam: (09) 438 8033

Automated text notification of absence

We have reinitiated our automated text message system for absences starting next week.  If your child is marked with an unknown absence in the morning on an automatic text message will be sent to the primary caregiver(s) to notify them.

Thank you very much to all whanau who have responded to these texts either by replying or contacting the office.  This has made a significant difference to the number of unjustified absences we have.

Policies

Te Kāpehu Whetū has worked with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well-researched and align with the National Education and Learning Priorities. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our school board has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented.

We invite you to visit the site at School Docs

Kaupapa

We believe passionately in our culture, our people, our ākonga, and we know that through hard work, commitment, and focused support they will achieve within the Kura and beyond. We do this hereby acknowledging the 28 Māori Battalion and the price paid for citizenship, so that ‘we’ can “Navigate Māori Futures”.

To do this we commit to success in all its forms:

Kia Māori – Be Māori – Be

An education that validates Māori knowledge and ways of learning.

Kia Mātau – Be Knowledgeable – Know

Encouraging innovation, inquiry, the development of specialised knowledge and skills.

Kia Tū Rangatira Ai – Be Rangatira – Do

Development of strong character and personal excellence, living with mana.
