We have made a busy start to Term 3 highlighted by the pōwhiri for our new Pouwhakaako Whaea Maia Cooper-Henare. Whaea Maia has spent the past seven years working at Moerewa School and to show their support for her they all (200+) came to her pōwhiri. Nau mai, haere mai e te uri whakaheke a Hineamaru. We also welcomed back Heiwari Smith to the Kura and two new ākonga Blade Ekman-Orr and Moeau Cherrington-Whatuira. Nau mai piki mai koutou ki Te Kāpehu Whetū. This is a big Term with the Kapa Haka Regionals on Saturday 5 September and our senior group heading to Chicago at the end of the Term. It is extra important that ākonga are managing their time and getting their mahi finished, particularly for NCEA. Your support in ensuring they are using their time wisely is much appreciated.

Early Finish Thursday 6 August

Due to holding Hui Whakapiki (see below) for senior ākonga we will be finishing Kura at 2pm on Thursday so that Pouako can prepare. The North Bus will still run at the same time for those ākonga that use it and any ākonga who cannot get home or be picked up early can stay at the Kura until the usual time.

 Hui Whakapiki – Seniors Year 11 – 13

We are holding Hui Whakapiki for all senior Year 11-13 ākonga from 3.30 – 7pm on Thursday 6 August. This is an important opportunity to meet with Pouako about ākonga progress so far this year and to plan their academic programme for the rest of the year. All whānau and ākonga must attend to ensure that evryone is clear on the progress that has been made and any additional support or planning that needs to be put in place. If you are unable to make it during this time please contact the office so that we can arrange an alternate time when you can meet with pouako.

Kapa Haka Regionals

We are in full swing preparing for the Tai Tokerau Regional Kapa Haka competitions which are being held on Saturday 5 September in Kaitaia. We are the sixth group performing and will be on stage at 12.20pm. Our ākonga have been working really hard and this will intensify over the next 4 weeks as the competition approaches. The performing group will be travelling up on Friday 4 September and staying overnight, a second bus will go up Saturday morning for other supporters (akonga will have first priority for seats available). Further information will come in the upcoming weeks. If your child is in the group please ensure that they make trainings and are prepared with kai, inu and correct clothing.

Massey University trip Year 10 & 11

On September 1 (Year 10) and September 2 (Year 11) we have the opportunity for ākonga to go down to the Massey University Albany campus for an open day focussed on Science. This is a chance for ākonga to see what is offered at the University and what types of jobs are available if you study Science. Further information will follow for the ākonga that will be participating.

Ngā manaakitanga,
Dr Nathan Matthews
