Ko te wiki whakamutunga o te Wāhanga Tuatoru, ā, kei te whakakapi mātou i runga i te āhua rangatira!

Tata ki te 50 tau ki muri, i ārahi a Dame Whina Cooper i tētahi hīkoi, e 1000km te roa, mai i Te Hiku o te Ika ki Te Whanganui-a-Tara, e tohe ana mō ngā motika whenua o te Māori. Ko Te Wiki o te Reo Māori tētahi o ngā hua o taua hīkoi, me ērā atu anō whakatutukitanga maha e noho mōhio kore nei tātou i ēnei rā. Me whakanui tātou i te 50 tau o te tū whakahōnore i ō tātou motika hei tangata whenua.

(Almost 50 years ago, Dame Whina Cooper led protesters on a 1000km march from the Far North to Wellington, fighting for Māori land rights. Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori is one of the outcomes of the hikoi as is many other achievements that we often take for granted. Let us celebrate 50 years of standing up for our rights as tangata whenua)

– Kupu Ora Kapa Haka organised by mātua Wiremu. Please come along.

– Please Note: Paenuku ākonga head to Paenuku we will bus you to and from!!!

– Tuakana ākonga head to Kura as per usual. Be there by 9am please.

 

Wednesday 17th – we are holding our end of term Platoon challenge down at Paenuku

– Tuakana ākonga make your way there or get dropped off up the top, whanau please don’t drive down the lane traffic, will be manic…or get dropped off at Bernard St, walk over the bridge and come down the pathway next to the creek and in the gate.

 

Thursday 18th – Don’t forget it’s the whole of Kura Whanau Hui 5.30pm at Maumahara

– We will go over where to find information specific to the kura or your tamaiti

Attendance

The evidence is very clear that attendance is a key driver of learners’ achievement, their wellbeing, and their lifelong outcomes. Regular attendance has a big impact: the more often children attend school, the better they do at school, the happier they are, and the better they are set up for life.

The government has set an attendance target for 2030.
80% of students to be attending 90% of the time (max of 5 days absence per term)

Currently across the country only 53% of students are.

Unfortunately in 2024 TKW’s regular attendance was less than this.

We need to work together whānau to get the best outcomes for our tamariki!

Just a couple of acknowledgements this week from me. Firstly, Piki Mihi Nui a special acknowledgement, that this Sunday, the 14th of September, in 1975, Whaea Whina Cooper lead the Hikoi that initiated a 50-year protest movement!!! That movement enabled us to establish our kura and many others around the country as well a host of Māori lead initiatives, that allow us today to Stand as Māori….

A given now, but at the time an extremely difficult thing to achieve. We need to recognise the sacrifices made by that generation for the sake of their mokopuna…..us!

In recognition of 50 Years since the Hikoi and to acknowledge ‘Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori’ our kura have decided to host a ‘Haka & Hikoi’ event “Kupu Ora Kapa Haka Gala” next Tuesday at TKW Tuakana, Reyburn House Lane from 10am – 2pm. We currently have 7 other schools/Kura coming and invite whanau to come and share this moment with us…..

Secondly, I’d like to acknowledge the Thompson whanau who brought in this beautiful platter of kai for the Pouako and ākonga at Paenuku, today as a token of appreciation.

 Our kura continues to step up to the plate!

This week the Academy represented the kura at Matua Nathan’s fathers nehu.  He was a Vietnam veteran and was buried at Maunu Cemetery in the Veterans section.  Matua Nathan is also the grand-nephew of Charlie Norris.  The 2025 Academy 13th Intake was named after Charlie Norris, it was appropriate to send the Academy, especially the Charlie Norris Intake, to show their respect.

We also acknowledge Whaea Kath ‘s loss last week.  Her sister passed…aroha ki tō whanau.

There are a lot of people, ākonga, staff, whanau getting sick at the moment and going down with a range of illnesses.  Take care, let us know and stay home if unwell.

“Kei te haurua o te term 3”

 

As you have probably all seen the Government is looking to change NCEA.  We are yet to see the detail.  Like many other kura/schools we are concerned at the pace of change and the amount of change coming at us but we also acknowledge the need for NCEA to become more fit-for-purpose.  We will work through it with our dedicated Pouako and keep you informed as we go. 

In addition, the Trust that oversees Te Kāpehu Whetῡ applied to establish a charter school in Tāmaki (Central Auckland) for senior ākonga (Year 11-13) to pathway too.  This has a been approved to start Feb 2026.  Exciting!!

Theres still plenty of work required to get it ready to open and take enrolments.  As the founding kura, ākonga who attend Te Kāpehu Whetῡ – Whangarei will have automatic access, assuming that they are meeting expectations under our 3 Pou.  Alternatively, they can choose to finish their kura years here in Whangarei. 

To ensure that you our whanau are well informed about the coming changes to NCEA and the option of sending ākonga to Te Kāpehu Whetῡ – Tāmaki, we are planning to hold a full whanau hui in the last week of Term 3, most likely Thursday 18th September at Maumahara

WE are well underway, and the term is already amping up!! Of course, in our sights is our kapa haka stand at Tōkihi Ki Tua – Secondary Regionals. Our roopu will be practicing every day this week through to 5pm Thursday afternoon. Then Matua Ropata will take a team through on Friday to do the walk through on stage. We will send out more details about Friday and Saturday later in the week.

Paetata is also underway, prepping our team to compete at AIMs Games later in term. The team has been selected and there is a whanau hui this Thursday at 4pm.

Paerangi is starting to offer ākonga career pathway considerations with many visits/taster courses on offer this term, from the Defence Force through to Trades, Hospitality and options in the Health area.

Talking about Health – we have been working with Ngati Hine Health Trust (NHHT) to bring a health support service to our Kura. It’s for both our ākonga and the whanau. We feel extremely lucky to be able to offer this given how difficult it is to get in to see doctor at times. Ngā mihi NHHT:
– Our first visit by a GP/Nurse team is tomorrow Monday 9.30am – 2.30pm.
– Its FREE
– They will be based over at Maumahara
– Appointments are through Whaea Karz on 021 02903610
– But if you have a health concern, can’t get into a doctor, pop in and we will try sort
– This service will be once a month
– It’s more for wellness and health checks, not urgent cases but if you can’t get in
anywhere come along anyway.
– Theres also a range of other services that NHHT are bringing – see the notice below

Automated text notification of absence

We will be reinitiating our automated text message system for absences this week. If your child is marked with an unknown absence in the morning an automatic text message is sent to the primary caregiver(s) to notify them.

Last year this made a significant difference to the number of unjustified absences we have. If you would like to discuss your tamaiti’s absence either contact the tari or email your child’s Pouwhakahaere.

In addition, you will get a term update of your child’s attendance at kura and we will be notify whānau who have children consistently absent and/or late.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well-researched and align with the National Education and Learning Priorities. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behavior management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. We have a fullterm in front of us, starting with the secondary schools Kapa Haka competition next Saturday in Kaikohe. Followed by a focus on lifting te reo Maori across kura and working to lift everyone’s academic level this term.

The evidence is very clear that attendance is a key driver of learners’ achievement, their wellbeing, and their lifelong outcomes. Regular attendance has a big impact: the more often children attend school, the better they do at school, the happier they are, and the better they are set up for life.

The government has set an attendance target for 2030.
80% of students to be attending 90% of the time (max of 5 days absence per term)

Currently across the country only 53% of students are.

Unfortunately in 2024 TKW’s regular attendance was less than this.

We need to work together whānau to get the best outcomes for our tamariki!

Awesome end to Term 2!!

He mutunga whakahirahira mō tō tātou Wāhanga 2

An intense term with plenty of academic mahi carried out, reflected in the sound academic standing of most of our ākonga. By now you should have you end of term reports to view. If not contact Whaea Sam at Paenuku or Whaea Jackie up at Tuakana.

Attached in this panui are amazing photos from the last day of Kura. Here we are at W Whakarite before the competitions starts. It was our first whole of Kura Platoon Challenge and it went off!! It started as a very wet, stormy day but that didn’t stop our ākonga from putting in full effort to make the day an amazing success. Ive included on the next page the Platoon results from the day, WELL DONE KOUTOU MA!

HAUORA:

We had the privilege of welcoming NgatiHine Health Trust into our kura last Monday. We have been working with their staff for awhile developing a Whanau Support Service that can be offered through our Kura.

With the health system becoming harder to access, we wanted to see how we could support our akonga, staff and whānau in accessing hau ora services . See attached panui. Bookings through Whaea Karlene or Whaea Kerrian.
